Cucumber Face Mask

I don’t know about you, but summers are hard on my skin.  The heat and extreme sweating releasing of toxins really leaves my skin looking rather dull, rough, and prone to breakouts, not to mention its unwillingness to befriend any type of makeup.  I try to stay away from scrubs and exfoliants as my skin’s really sensitive.  During summer, there’s nothing that my skin loves more than homemade cucumber masks!  Cucumbers are definitely a summer staple at our house.  I love to pickle, marinate, sautee, or just eat them raw as well as to put them on my face.  I wish to share this easy formula with you, and I thought how appropriate it would be to incorporate this into the wonderful summer link-up party courtesy of Jenn!

Before I get into sharing my cucumber mask (prepared 2 ways), here’s a look at what I ate yesterday.

Trust me.  My plates did NOT look all pretty like you see in the pictures.  Yesterday was leftover day and these pics are from when I first made them.   I had some yogurt with granola in the morning.  Lunch was a quinoa salad with beets, avocado, and kale.  And for dinner, I had some marinated tofu with rice and a side of spinach salad.  As usual, I had a good number of snacks throughout the day.  I tried The Simply Bar for the first time, and just like Brittany promised, they were awesome!  I’ll be doing a review on them soon.  Yup, they were THAT GOOD! 😉  I also had a veggie patty, banana, scoopful handful of almonds, and a bowl of cookies ‘n cream ice cream.

OK!  Now it’s time to turn our focus back to our skin.  DIY face masks are VERY popular in Korea.  And yes, the rumors are true, I’m afraid – Korea is a very beauty-obssessed culture.  Whenever I go to visit during the summer, I feel very self-conscious and can’t help but feel like an ugly duckling.  Contrary to America where the tanned look is preferred, Koreans worship pale, white skin.  The paler the better.  In the summertime, the cosmetic market overflows with all sorts of “whitening” products.  So you can only imagine, this Texas girl has no chance there as comments like “wow, you’re so dark” are thrown at me from left and right :(.

However, I do appreciate all the different DIY face masks that these Korean women with flawless porcelain skin come up with.  They’re cheap and fun to do with your girlfriends or in my case, the hubby ;).   To start off, here are two different ways to use cucumbers to beautify your skin!  Did I grab your attention?  🙂  Cucumbers help smooth and soothe your skin, and they’re popular in Korea for their whitening effect.  They truly leave your skin feeling instantly refreshed and revitalized.  If nothing else, I just love how cool and tingly it feels when applied to my skin.

The simplest way is to slice the cucumber super thin so that it’ll cling to your face!  I used a Japanese mandoline.  Leave the slices on your face for about 10-12 min.  Remove and pat the moisture into your skin.

The second way takes a lil’ more work.  Grate about 1/3 cucumber, add enough flour so that it will thicken (should not be runny!  I used about 2 Tbs.), and add 1/2 Tbs honey.

Apply to face using a brush or just hands.  It’s better if you have someone else do it for you.  If not, just use a hand mirror while lying down in order to apply to your face.  I like to have a towel over the neck and behind the ear to catch any liquid that may run down the face.  Leave on for 10-12 min.  Be sure to rinse it off in the kitchen sink as you don’t want cucumber chunks and flour to clog up your bathroom drain!

I didn’t trust the hubby to do a good job of putting the mixture onto my face, so I kindly volunteered him ;).  He was a good sport about it!  Kona..”Daddy, can I eat your face?”  As for me, I would normally be lying down, but I wanted to show you that the cucumber slices MUST be thin enough to the point that they’ll stay on your face even when sitting up.

Tim really appreciated the pampering.  Our skin’s happy, and we feel refreshed.  Kona got a treat also!  A wonderful activity for the whole family ;)!

Yup, that one came straight from my face!  Nice and salty ;).  Do you see the look of determination in his eyes?

Question:

Have you tried homemade face masks?  If so, do share!

  2. Lauren says:

Haha! I remember when you told me to do this! It’s a very refreshing and moisturizing mask. The absolute best and easiest mask I’ve ever done is to mash up an avocado and put it on my face for about 30 minutes. I’m telling you, it plumps your face like nothing else and makes it glow and look so hydrated!

  3. spabettie says:

cucumber is so soothing, I love this! I used to make masks and scrubs a lot, but have not for a while. I still make scrubs to give as gifts sometimes, and they have been in many a blog auction! 🙂

and an official hello! I am here from Jenn’s WIAW 😀

    • Min says:

Hi! What a clever name!! At first I thought, is it bc she loves spaghetti? And then I just visited your blog and read about your love for spas ;). How neat! Ooh! I’d be so happy if I received one of those scrubs! What a wonderful gift! Thank you for stopping by today! Happy WIAW!!

  4. I really dislike cucumber to eat, but maybe I’d like it on my face?! I have quite dry skin so I think it would suit me well 🙂

  5. I’ve never had any kind of mask or facial, but I think I may try this!! Tim is such a good sport 🙂 I love the idea of using something all natural like cucumber!

My mom was always telling me not to get tan when I was younger, in some ways I wish I had listened to her 😉

    • Min says:

Hi, Maura! I’ve had facials before, but I don’t think my face tolerates those harsh chemical peels commonly used in Korea. It likes natural ingredients just like my tummy ;). Tim’s a good companion, no doubt about that hehe. I wish I listened to my mom when she nagged on me to put sunblock on. Now my face is covered with sun spots 😦

      • Mine too! I also got some dark spots after being pregnant with Malia. I’m so much more protective of my skin now….moms do know best, sometimes, huh? 🙂

  6. I have always heard that eating cucumbers is great for skin because of their water content but didn’t know about actually applying it to the face! This sounds really odd but crushed aspirin mixed with a bit of water is great for getting rid of a spot- just apply the paste to the troubled region! Also oats are apparently a great base for a face mask- they truly are a wonder food all round :)!

    • Min says:

Oh wow! That’s very interesting, Khushboo! I’m def going to try it! I have a lot of spots that need some further attention. I’ve used oats before also, and you’re right! They really are amazing!

  7. Great post, my skin needs this! Cookies n cream is my favorite!

    • Min says:

Mine too! For the longest time it was mint chocolate chip, but somewhere down the road, I made the switch…I couldn’t be happier 😉

  8. My thing is it doesn’t have to look pretty as long as it feels good.

  9. Good eats! 🙂 I’ve never tried a Simply Bar before but would love to.
Thanks for sharing thise face mask recipe!! 😀

  10. Stephanie says:

You are so cute Min! Love this and want to try!

  11. Courtney says:

Love this – I’ll have to try it! 😀

  12. I’ve never done a homemade face mask but my skin has been awful lately! I don’t know what it is other than that sweating in the heat of summer is making my skin breakout. I’m going to have to try one of these! They are both s simple!

    • Min says:

Me too! I’ve been breaking out like crazy…:( Not cool. They’re these big angry ones. I really do think it’s cuz I’m sweating all the time..I hope these masks will help if you decide to try 😉

  13. that’s my favorite simply bar flavor! love them. :0

this is a really cool mask. i will have to try it – my skin revolts during the summer, and asian women always have the most beautiful skin. probably also because they tend to stay out of the the sun as you point out.. whoops!

    • Min says:

Yea, this one’s my favorite also! Love that burst of lemon followed by unmistakeable coconut flavor :). Haha..yes, I wish I could stay in for the sake of beauty..but I’m so solar-powered so there goes that 😉

  14. Kona is too cute! Wants to be in the action.
Love the idea for an at home face mask. I am definitely going to do this! Great idea!

    • Min says:

I really don’t know how he refrained himself! He’s so food-driven! Thanks and let me know your thoughts after you tried it! Hope you’ll like it!

  15. eatpraytri says:

I love anything cucumber. Eating them. Lotions, spritzers…soo crisp and refreshing. Kona is SOO determined. I’m sure he enjoyed every bite. That quinoa looks so good. I love mixing avocado with mine!

    • Min says:

He sure did! He ate almost everything that was on my face..I kinda felt guilty giving it to him..it was on my face…haha..but he certainly didn’t seem to mind. Avocado goes with everything doesn’t it?

  16. Hi Min, I’ve missed you! I just thought of you yesterday. I haven’t had time to be an active blogger so I’ve been missing a lot 😦 I love your page this way!! Your profile is so professional and cute. Very lovely! Oh and cookies & cream ice cream?! Sounds soooo nice! XO

    • Min says:

Hi Leanne! I missed you too! How are you? I’m assuming your very busy with your new business venture? Thank you for the compliments! I really like it too 😉 I’m heading over to your blog right now!

      • I’m doing great – in a very hectic and busy way 😉 I’m trying to get people excited about health and fitness but it’s hard to reach people, especially this time of year when most people are on a vacation.
Do you have a summer break now?

P.S. I wrote you a message on your FB-page as well btw 🙂

  17. Becks says:

Your photos are so cute! And I love that your dog gets involved. I haven’t done a face mask in forever, but I accidentally bought four cucumbers this week. Maybe I’ll make your face mask today. Thanks for the idea!

  18. Gabby says:

Very interesting! I’ve heard the same to be same of the Filipino culture – lighter skin is preferred.

The cucumber mask definitely looks super refreshing! 🙂 Looks like your dog is ready to lick your husband’s face in that photo haha.

    • Min says:

RIght? It’s soo frustrating! I mean I guess I can just cake on my makeup but how attractive would that be having my face and neck two diff colors?
It was soo incredibly refreshing! And I don’t know how this food-obsessed dog stayed put 😉 One proud mama right here hehe

I’m glad for another way to use up the cucumber from my garden! I was making some quick kimchee with gochujang and thought, “no way I can eat this much kimchee!” The facial masks sound like a much better alternative, thanks for sharing!

    • Min says:

Haha! I know what you mean! Unlike you, I don’t make them from scratch (my hats to you!! That’s awesome!), but those store-bought jars are so ginormous! I mean I love kimchee, but not that much haha.

      • thefoodery says:

With just two people it’s hard to eat a whole jar, but at least it’ll keep for a long time. All I did was chop cucumbers and put a spoonful of sauce in the jar with garlic and a little salt. Doesn’t taste like real kimchee, but oh well! 🙂

  21. Ellie says:

Niiice I love it when you give some background about Korean culture and your thoughts on it! I really enjoy looking at the different cultural aspects of different countries. And although Korea has a lot of honorable characteristics, that one about aesthetics saddens me 😦 And this is such a great post! haha I can’t believe Tim was actually up for that! wHAT a trooper he is……;)

    • Min says:

Yup…me too…I can’t help but to get really self-conscious when I’m there. Even when I go to the grocery store, I feel like I have to make myself somewhat presentable and prettier. Tim actually really loved the mask 😉 Don’t tell him I said that hehe.

  22. scandals says:

Heya i’m for the first time here. I found this board and I find It really helpful & it helped me out a lot. I’m hoping to give one thing back and help others such as you helped me.

  23. So very true….Thanks for blogging this….

  24. Ellaine says:

Hi, I have a question, after putting the sliced cucumbers on the face what will I do? Am I going to rinse it?
